FAQ

What should I pay attention to when using a spray gun?

1. Use of personal protective equipment

Generally when using a spray gun (spraying paint, cleaning spray gun), most of the time there is a large amount of organic gas volatilization. These gases (aerosols) are harmful to people. Often there are a lot of operators do not pay attention to good defense measures. We must protect ourselves, should be operating the spray gun must wear good protective equipment, such as, spray paint protective clothing, protective glasses, activated carbon mask, anti-thinning gloves and so on.

2. The use of low purity compressed air

impurities in the compressed air (eg: water, particles, oil) often lead to major errors in spraying and failure to satisfy the customer. Optimum air purification is an absolute must for optimum spraying results. Adding a filter is also necessary.

3. Compressed air inlet regulating air pressure

Users often forget that as the diameter and length of compressed air tubes and connections rise, the pressure will fall. Thus, for a 15m tube with a diameter of 6mm, the adjusted pressure at the inlet is 4.0bar, while the actual pressure reaching the gun is 2.0bar.

4. Soaking the gun in old thinner

Spray guns are often soaked in dirty old thinner. However, by doing so the gun's atomization holes, air passages, are often clogged with paint residue. These solid particles slowly accumulate and eventually block the entire air passage. As a result, the spray gun becomes completely obsolete or requires costly and time-consuming repairs. For this reason, orifices are often flushed when using advanced gun cleaning machines. When cleaning by hand, it should be ensured that no solid particles through the air intake port atomization holes or into the interior of the gun.

5. Using Improper Cleaning Tools

The wrong tools (e.g., paper clips and wire brushes) are often used when cleaning the nozzle. This will lead to the type of spray and atomization effect is damaged, the only way to achieve the best results by replacing the nozzle. For thorough and careful cleaning, especially of parts such as the air cap, we recommend using the cleaning tool (small brush) that comes with the gun to ensure that the quality of the gun is maintained for a longer period of time.

6. Rough disassembly of gun parts

The front and rear gasket surfaces of the gun are usually damaged by unsuitable tools. To ensure a tight seal on the gun, you should use the special tools included in the box for disassembly operations.

7. Using Mismatched Tip Assemblies

Matching tip assemblies are a determining factor in achieving optimum spraying results. All spray guns are supplied with spare nozzle parts that have been precisely adjusted and tested to ensure optimum accuracy. Mixing different types of nozzle components can affect spraying results and cause poor atomization.

What are the precautions to be taken when using a spray gun?

1. After each work session, the spray gun should be thoroughly rinsed, especially for each hole of the nozzle and the air cap.

2. Before leaving work each day, a thorough cleaning should be conducted (disassemble the nozzle, air cap, and gun needle), when cleaning the air holes, do not use hard steel wires (such as pins, return needles, etc.) to avoid deformation of the air holes, and any minor deformation will affect the atomization effect.

3. After cleaning the spray gun, lubricate all detachable friction components with spray gun-specific lubricating oil, be careful not to apply it to the front end of the gun needle.

4. When disassembling and installing the nozzle three-piece components, follow the procedures strictly (gun cap → gun needle → nozzle). Violating the operation procedures may easily lead to phenomena such as nozzle cracking.

5. The nozzle three-piece components must not be arbitrarily swapped with other same-model nozzle sets, nor can any single component be replaced alone.

6. When adjusting the air cap, the characters on the air cap must not be inverted. Otherwise, it may affect the uniformity of the spray area.

7. It is recommended to install an air pressure gauge at the end of the spray gun to regulate and control the spraying air pressure. The stability of the air pressure can ensure uniform spraying color and consistent thickness of the paint film.

8. It is strictly prohibited to immerse the entire spray gun in cleaning solvents to prevent solvents from entering the air pipeline of the spray gun, causing damage to the spray gun.

9. Insufficient spraying air pressure will result in severe orange peel patterns on the paint film and poor atomization; excessive air pressure will cause the coating to "dry spray", reducing the gloss of the paint film or the adhesion of the paint, and also causing uneven atomization (the paint on both ends of the spray area is more than the middle part, which is commonly referred to as "lifting" or "clouding" phenomena).

10. Before each work session or after cleaning, check the tightness of each component. Especially the fixing bolt of the spraying air pressure adjustment knob.

11. Keep the air holes of the gun cap air valve unobstructed, otherwise the coating flow will be smaller due to inversion.

12. The plastic leak-proof ring inside the gun holder should be kept intact. If it is broken, replace it immediately to avoid paint dripping and leaking from the holder's mouth.

13. If there is a leakage of compressed air at the air connection point at the gun tail, immediately replace the air connection and air nozzle with the same specification, do not use paper tape or other similar objects to replace the sealing parts, to avoid the entry of tape fragments and other debris into the air pipeline of the spray gun, causing blockage of the spray gun's air passage.

14. The spray gun must not be used to spray alkaline coatings and ground spraying materials (such as lead oxide and liquid steel sand, etc.).

15. The solvents used for spraying and cleaning the spray gun must not use acidic or alkaline liquids (such as recycled and regenerated solvents), otherwise it is easy to cause corrosion and damage to the spray gun components.

Common Spray Gun Faults and Solutions

The spray gun may leak air or paint due to improper use and maintenance, or long-term use without thorough cleaning, which may cause blockage of air or paint passages, or aging of gaskets and springs without timely replacement. This may cause some faults during spraying. In summary, spray gun faults are mainly divided into two aspects: incomplete spray pattern and faults of spray gun parts. Operators can analyze and investigate according to the following table.

Atomization is biased to the left or right. Reasons:  1. The fan control hole on one side of the atomizer cap is blocked  2. The atomizer cap is damaged

Countermeasures:  1. Clean the atomizer cap  2. Replace the atomizer cap

The center of the spray width is too thick. Reasons:  1. The viscosity of the sprayed paint is too high  2. The spraying pressure is too low  3. The diameter of the nozzle and the ejector pin increase and decrease due to wear

Countermeasures:  1. Lower the viscosity of the paint  2. Increase the spraying pressure  3. Replace the nozzle set

Spray width splitting. Reasons:  1. The viscosity of the paint is too low  2. The spraying pressure is too high  3. The inner diameter of the fan control hole is too large  4. Insufficient paint  5. The atomization air channel is blocked

Countermeasures:  1. Increase the viscosity of the paint  2. Reduce the spray pressure  3. Replace the nozzle set  4. Add enough paint  5. Clean the air channel of the spray gun
